Long-term planning and daily action lead to success.
Good organization allows you to gain control of your time, allowing you to plan and complete the tasks required to achieve your objectives.
Here are eight organizational tips to help you achieve your long-term work goals.
1. Concentrate on what matters.
Remind yourself of your long-term objectives and revise them as needed. Set daily priorities to help you achieve your goals. Keep family photos or inspirational images nearby.

2. Make a list
Make to-do lists for important tasks on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. At the start of each day, go over your daily priorities.
3. Take good care of your time.
Plan quiet time at work to complete tasks that require extra concentration. Do your most difficult work when you have the most energy; save less demanding tasks for other times. If you are prone to procrastination, visualize the sense of accomplishment you will feel once the task is completed. Plan your day's activities during your commute.
4. Make use of calendars and planners.
Check your work calendar on a daily basis to keep track of your activities and avoid conflicts. Rather than relying on your memory, write down all commitments in pencil. Long-term projects can be mapped out using planning and scheduling forms and software.
5. Tasks should be delegated.
When a task is beyond your level of expertise, delegate it to others. Provide appropriate project training and feedback.
6. Control your mail and phone calls.
Sort incoming mail into priority or action categories. To screen phone calls, use voice mail.
7. Clear the clutter.
Make your workspace presentable. Keep only the most important items and information at the top of your desk. Save reference materials that you rarely use. Remove duplicate information and materials that will soon become obsolete. Leave blank space on your bookshelves for future growth.
8. Maintain your organization.
Sort files by priority and keep the most important ones close at hand. Spend 15 minutes clearing your desk at the end of each day and 15 minutes planning your day's activities the next morning. Examine the first seven items on this list.
