What qualities distinguish a good friend?

Having good friends makes you happy, and making others happy makes you happy. Consider your friendships: are you being a good friend? Are your friends being supportive of you?

Good friends make you happy.

Good friends make you feel good by complimenting you, congratulating you, and expressing their joy for you.

Good friends help each other.

If you're down, a good friend will be there for you. If you need assistance, a good friend will try to assist you.

Good friends do not always share everything.

Everyone is unique, with unique hobbies and interests. Even if you don't like the same bands, activities, TV shows, or animals, a good friend will encourage you rather than make you feel bad for liking a different band, activity, TV show, or animal! A good friend understands that you need time to yourself and enjoys doing things you have in common with you.

Good friends pay attention.

A good friend lets you talk without interfering. They're interested in what you're saying.

Good friends can be relied on.

If you tell a good friend something private, they will not tell anyone else. You can rely on a good friend not to pass judgment.

Respectful conflict resolution and boundaries are the hallmarks of good friends.

You and your friend may occasionally disagree on something. You may have said or done something that irritated your friend at times. A good friend will tell you if you've done something that has caused them pain. If you tell a good friend that they have hurt you, they will apologize and promise not to do it again.

Good friendships are reciprocal.

It's not a good friendship if one of you is constantly talking and the other is constantly listening. Instead of one friend receiving all the compliments and the other giving them all the time, good friends make each other feel good. You're making each other feel great in a good friendship!

Having a group of pals

Don't limit yourself to just one "best friend." Your friendship is unique, and you can share it with anyone who needs a friend! Friendships can drift apart or fall out. That is a natural part of life. Having more than one friend increases the likelihood that you will be able to get help when you need it. Not followers, but friends

In the digital world, you may feel pressured to have a large number of friends and followers. Remember that you only need a small group of friends to be happy, and it's best to reserve your most precious (and private) thoughts and moments for those who truly care about you.

Help! I have a terrible friend!

You may discover that someone you thought was a friend has not been a good friend to you. What you can do in this situation is discussed on our friendships and frenemies page.
