How (And Why) to Take a Break From Social Media

Smartphones. We can't seem to live without them. You probably believe it is impossible to limit your social media usage in this day and age. We must check every email that arrives on our phones. Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram have also taken over a significant portion of our time. If you've noticed yourself looking at your phone more and less at the people you care about, it might be time to take a break from social media.

Why should you disconnect?

Although social media has many positive aspects, it can also have a negative impact on our lives. Try keeping track of how much time you spend on social media in a single day. Most of us would be disappointed to discover that our social media habits consume far more time than we anticipated. Consider what you could do or achieve with that extra time. It's not just a matter of time. Consider the content of what you're looking at. Are you getting sucked into the social media drama, political debates, or self-esteem crushing comparisons? Would replacing that content with other things like good books, time with friends, or just time for self-reflection improve your life?

Disconnecting from the internet is a difficult task. You'll have to do it yourself unless you want to go somewhere without reception. To help you disconnect from the constant pull of posts, emails, and tweets, try these suggestions.

Uninstall your favorite applications.

Uninstall your favorite apps from your smartphone if you want to spend less time looking at it. Remove Instagram from your phone if you spend far too much time scrolling through it. Tell yourself that you can still use your laptop to access Instagram, but not your phone. Cutting off that quick and easy access will get you out of the habit of checking your phone several times a day.

Examine your notification settings.

Are you receiving notifications for every event on your social media platforms? Check your notification settings to ensure you're only receiving the most important ones. If email is a temptation, configure your phone so that you are not notified every time you receive a new email. Turn off notifications for apps that don't directly benefit your daily life. The constant updates will not be missed.

Pick your favorite

Reduce the number of social media apps that you allow to consume your time and delete the rest. You are not required to use every social media platform available. Simply pick your favorite and discard the rest.

Place your phone away.

Simply put your phone away when you know you'll need to concentrate. Going out with friends? Leave your phone at home. Are you taking your children to the park? Place your phone in the diaper bag's bottom. What about a date? Keep your phone at home. You don't have to bring your phone with you everywhere. In fact, disconnecting in small doses will help you enjoy your life and the people around you more.

Consider Your Posting Priorities

If you're going to use social media, you should be aware of the following dos and don'ts:

  • "Do" post things after you've had time to think about what you've written.
  • When you're upset or under the influence of a strong emotion, "don't" post anything (both anger and alcohol can cause otherwise intelligent people to post stupid things).
  • "Do" share things that are encouraging to you and others.
  • "Do not" post late at night when you could be sleeping.
  • "Do" think about how social media affects you.
  • "Do not" allow yourself an open period where you mindlessly drift to wherever social media takes you.

It's difficult to avoid social media in today's world. However, disconnecting from the internet and reconnecting with the world can be a good way to refocus your time and attention on what is most important.
